Natural remedies...

The most natural and effective way to treat many ailments and support weaknesses in a horses body is to feed herbs. Although all kinds of herbs are good for horses, specifically formulated herb combinations are the best way to target areas of the body that need assistance to function more effectively.  Herbs may not work quite as quickly as conventional chemical medicine but they are extremely potent and powerful if given in the correct dosage.

In their natural habitat, horses are foragers and will actively seek out what they need  to support a healthy body which in the wild was much more possible than in the domestic environment most are kept in.  We now live in a world of highly processed horse feeds which claim to provide the horse with everything it needs and fast when all they really need is a natural basic diet of bran, oats, vegetables and herbs.  After all,  historically, how did the horse ever survive without these feeds...the answer is much more happily without health, temperament and psychological problems, mostly due to pain, discomfort and general aggravation.  The horse owner doesn't benefit either from spending large amounts of money on feed for the so called good of the horse and expect results that rarely materialise with the potential to leave the horse in a much worse state than before.  Its our duty, to our equine companions who do so much for us, to provide as much of a natural environment for them as we can and to try to think from the horses perspective.

Ellen Collinson has founded and produced effective herbal formulas over 30 years ago that have been proven extremely successful over the years.  They are unique, 100% pure (no fillers) and 100% herbal, with no prohibited herbs,- making them safe yet extremely powerful, even for horses/ponies competing under rules.  I have given these herbs to my horse so they are personally tried and tested , using the Liver Herbs and Herbal Bute which have both shown to have excellent results and also the NoVerms which literally rid him of worms after one dose resulting in a worm count of 0. Follow the tab above under 'More' to Ellen's website where you can find further info and purchase herbs.

The herbs available cover all kinds of ailments, supporting the body back to natural health with most requiring just a one off course to repair it. Here are some examples of the types of herbs offered and what they are used for.

You can also bring nature to your horse by giving them the opportunity to self select herbs that you provide for them.  There are lots of good quality herbs you can buy to offer them on a regular basis allowing them to take what they need.  There are far too many to mention but some of the most important are as follows:-

Comfrey
An excellent source of minerals:- calcium, iron, magnesium etc and one of the best remedies for the respiratory system and internal bleeding. The parts of this plant that can be used is the leaves and roots.  The body parts that benefit are bones, lungs, stomach and muscles with a general affect on the whole body.

Nettles
A very important herb although you probably wouldn't know it as they are considered more of a weed and are growing everywhere! They are rich in minerals including iron, lime, potassium, sodium, sulphur, and contain much protein.  The body parts affected are Kidneys, Blood, Bladder and Lungs.

Cleavers
Very accessible to many people, a sticky plant that grows in hedgerows with the little bobbles that stick to everything. It is a good source of calcium, copper, iron, silicon and sodium. An extremely powerful blood cleanser and a handful daily would flush out the kidneys, clean the blood and strengthen the liver. The body parts that Cleavers can help are the kidneys, bladder, blood and skin.

Dandelion
Again an excellent herb for the Liver and a really good blood purifier because it has a high content of minerals. Contains calcium, copper, fluorine, magnesium, potassium, sodium and sulphur.  The parts of the body it can help are Liver, Kidneys, Stomach, Pancreas, Intestines and Blood.
